Finding your artistic voice/style

Updated: Feb 18, 2019

Your style is what defines you and sets you apart from everyone else.

Developing your artistic style doesn't always come easy. It takes a lot of trial and error before one can truly began developing their own unique style. So, if your not there yet don’t worry because it is all apart of this beautiful process.

If your seeking guidance, which you probably are since you're here, I’ve listed below the things that personally helped me develop my style and find my voice as an artist.

First, don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things! I highly recommend that you step out of comfort zone and create something that you normally wouldn't. You really have no idea what you may discover.

Second, take note of what inspires you. Is it nature, architecture, random everyday items? All of these things can have an effect on what you create and how you create it. A huge part of who you are as an artist is the thing that inspires you the most.

Third, take a look at the work from others that inspire you.I’m not telling you to copy, but it's OK to be inspired. What about these pieces catches your eye? Are there certain elements or colors that you are drawn to the most?

And Lastly, take time to evaluate your own work and process. I recommend that you pay attention to how you are feeling while you're creating. If it's bringing you joy, then you should probably keep it up. But if your miserable throughout the entire process, then that concept/style probably isn't for you. When evaluating your work ask yourself what parts you like, and what you don’t like. And take note of the style/ technique that you keep coming back to. All of this combined will help you figure out what you love creating the most and will help you get a better sense of your style. Honestly, this is probably the most important step and If you don't do any of the above, at least take the time to do this. Not only will it help you find your style, but it will also help you improve and become better connected to your art.

Finding your style and voice as an artist is a beautiful journey and shouldn't be rushed. So don’t stress yourself out over it. Just have fun, experiment, and always go with your instinct.
